Talk to any golfer from the Pro to the weekend amateur and the conversation will be along these lines:
“Maybe if I buy this new club, I will hit the ball longer”
OR
“If I go to this new Golf Clinic I will learn how to hit the ball longer”
If you analyze these two statements, there is an interesting correlation but one goal-most golfers desire to “hit the ball longer”. The fact is most golfers, since the inception of the game of modern golf, have been and continue to look for the “secret” to hitting the ball longer when it in actuality there is no “secret” but pure facts for every golfer to learn. For over forty years, I have personally Proper Strength trained numerous golfers of all levels and they all tell me they increased their driving distance on the golf course after my high intensity training workouts. Where the ball went after the drive I did not take the credit or blame which involves their “skill level” on the golf course. All I know is they would tell me week after week that their high intensity training workouts definitely increased their distance.
I am a regular guest on an International Golf Radio Show and the question was asked during Saturday’s show “won’t lifting weights in a high intensity training program ruin your golf game”. I had to shake my head in disbelief because after all these years the myths about high intensity training are still alive and well.
My reply was “The game of golf produces unbelievable forces on all the joints-the spine, hip, knees, elbows shoulders, and neck. As a result many high level golfers suffer some type of or orthopedic injury sometime in their life. These injuries to the golfer’s joints may reduce or eliminate their ability to play golf for their lifetime. High Intensity Strength Training will improve their golf game and will reduce the potential and severity of injuries because your muscles, ligaments, and tendons become stronger, more functional and durable with regular high intensity strength training workouts.”
Everyone knows that golf requires a specific set of skills that must be practiced, however, the “smart golfer” can use the “secret” of adding two weekly high intensity strength training workouts to his or her schedule to improve their overall golf game including hitting that ball longer!
